Robert E. Lewis - Athletic Alumni 2005

Bob Lewis had a positive impact on people - in sports, scholastics and life lessons.  His many significant accomplishments include receiving eight athletic letters at Ann Arbor High School.  While at Ann Arbor High he co-captained the basketball team, which won the state Semi-Championship, he played varsity baseball, and, showing his customary physical and mental dexterity, he quarterbacked the state championship football team in 1955. That year he won the MVP Ball Trophy.   In his senior year he was voted most versatile male and was awarded the Horatio N. Chute Medal, an award given in recognition of those qualities which make up the best high school citizens.

Bob enlisted in the US Army after completing his education at Yale.  He was a very giving person.  In fact, he gave the ultimate, his life, in an attempt to rescue a fellow soldier from drowning.  For his courageous and unselfish heroism, Bob was awarded the Soldier’s Medal by the Army.   As a lasting tribute to Bob was the establishment of a scholarship at Ann Arbor High School in his memory.

All who knew Bob were greatly touched by his quiet leadership, strength of character and example he set for others.  He is greatly missed.
